IL2 DCG FAQ
IL2 DCG FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Paul Lowengrin Sunday 25 June 2006

Q1. What is IL2DCG?

IL-2 DCG is a dynamic campaign generator (programme) for the IL-2 "Sturmovik" series by Maddox Games. It can generate campaigns for both on-line and off-line play. For more information, see the IL-2 DCG Introduction Article.

Q2. Is IL2DCG's campaign system really dynamic?

Yes, to the extent that events that occur in one mission have a direct influence on future missions. Plane losses to the player and AI flights will result in fewer planes in subsequent missions (although if plane losses stay down, the flight will eventually be returned to full strength). All AI pilots are tracked and their skill levels will improve over time...assuming they live long enough. Those killed will be replaced with new pilots at their "base" skill level.

Q3. So IL2DCG air war is dynamic. But is the ground war?

Yes, DCG's ground war is dynamic as well. DCG ground war is, however, portrayed at only a tactical level. Tanks move across the map and seize the territory they cross. If destroyed, they are removed and return as reinforcements (in the rear zone). Truck columns and trains act as supply units "fixing" stationary units when they end the mission near those units. Like tanks, if destroyed, they later return in the rear zone as reinforcements.

Q4. How does the air war contribute to the ground war?

Every squad mission can directly or indirectly contribute to the ground war. For example, destroying a tank unit near the front will make it impossible for the enemy to push into your territory. Destroying artillery guns will prevent their use against your tanks until a truck column arrives at the location to resupply it. And finally destroying a truck column or train will limit the enemies ability to rebuild static defenses.

Q5. I can't minimize IL-2/FB to generate a new mission for a coop or dogfight campaign because the game will lock up, or I'll lose my joystick settings, or something else bad will happen. How can I generate a new mission without closing IL-2/FB?

IL2DCG has a hotkey [CTRL+SHIFT+G]. Run DCG and leave it running before starting IL-2/FB. When you are ready to generate a new mission, press [CTRL+SHIFT+G]. A new mission will be generated although you may have to "refresh" the IL2 mission screen by exiting and re-entering the DCG listing.

Q6. The hotkey is good but can't I just have DCG generate career missions automatically when I end a mission?

Yes, use the Auto-Generation Career mode option. In order to use the Auto-Generation Career mode in "IL-2 Forgotten Battles", use the steps found in the Modes Article under "Auto-Generation Mode".

Q7. How do I get the roster and debrief screens that are available in the FB DGen campaigns? Can I also use the default FB Campaign Set Up Screens?

Yes, just follow the steps found in the Modes Article under "Full Auto-Generation Mode".

Q8. I would like to fly Russian, but everytime I switch to a Russian squadron, the mission created has me flying German.

Most likely you are not editing the player squadron when you think you are. The first dropdown box in the editor selects the squadron you wish to view and/or edit. The first squadron shown is always the player's squadron (in Single Player games). If you want to change the nationality and/or plane type for the player's squadron, carefully follow the instructions in Q7 above.

Q9. This FAQ doesn't answer my question. Where can I get an answer?

Join us at the II/JG1 forum . In it, there is a section for IL2DCG questions. Usually you'll get an answer within 24 hours.

ghostrider, email me.

Is it possible to use the version on the forums which was designed for UP 2.0 on condition I wouldn't use new planes?

Lowengrin on 03 Sep : 08:03
Rumours, rumours, rumours. The latest (as yet unreleased) version of DCG has enhancements which work with MDS.

ghostrider on 03 Sep : 01:05
Hi, Paul, I've read something about new version of DCG, which would work with UP 2.01. Is there any progress?

Lowengrin on 24 Aug : 15:03
All but Med'41. However, the Russian ones follow a German/Russian path and you may find yourself fighting in 1945 for Berlin.

Paul,

thx, I will try that as soon as my own computer has been fixed.

As I could select the Italian career from DCG (Med'41, Tobruk'41, Typhoon '41, Rhez '42 and Kursk, I assumed that those campaigns are linked.

Lowengrin on 22 Aug : 21:16
Further to my note below, as the winner was Italy, you need to change the "Red" to "Blue" in the first line.

Lowengrin on 22 Aug : 21:15
Med'41 is actually a stand-alone campaign. It doesn't link to anything. If you want it to link to Tobruk '41, you'll need to add the following to the grandcampaign.dcg file:

[Mediterranean41 o Tobruk41] Red
Campaign=Western_Campaign
Map=SandsOfTime
StartDate=01/12/1941
Front=Tobruk_Supply_Depot
DeHome=Bengazi_Road
RuHome=El_Alamein_Road
DeBase=Gazala_Airfield
RuBase=Gambut_Airfield
Locale1=Maleme_Airfield
Locale2=Maleme
Locale3=Bengazi_Road_Depot
Locale4=Maleme_Beachhead

Hello Paul,

I have a problem witk the DCG Italian Career. When the first campaign (Mediterrenean) ends because the enemy has retreated, I do not progress to the next campaign (Tobruk). I only get new missions without any enemies. Do you have any ideas?

Lowengrin on 11 Aug : 17:28
You're welcome.
